What is UPSC & What does it do ?

UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission. It is India's premier constitutional body responsible for recruiting officers for the Government of India.

The Union Public Service Commission in its present constitutional form came into existence on 26 January 1950 under Article 315 of the Constitution.

Through the Civil Services Examination (CSE), UPSC selects candidates for prestigious services such as IAS, IPS, IFS and other Central Civil Services.

(Forest Service has a separate Mains examination.)

What Does an IAS Officer Do?

An IAS officer:

What Does an IPS Officer Do?

An IPS officer:

What is the Civil Services Examination (CSE)?

The Civil Services Examination is India's most prestigious competitive examination conducted annually by UPSC for recruitment into various civil services.

It consists of:

  1. Preliminary Examination

  2. Main Examination

  3. Personality Test (Interview)

Why is UPSC Considered Difficult?

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

Paper I – General Studies

Paper II – CSAT

Objective type examination.

Marks obtained are used only for screening.

Stage 2: Main Examination

Nine papers including:

• Essay
• General Studies I
• General Studies II
• General Studies III
• General Studies IV
• Optional Subject Papers
• Language Papers

Descriptive examination.

Stage 3: Personality Test

Interview conducted by UPSC Board.

Eligibility for UPSC

Educational Qualification

Bachelor's Degree from a recognized university.

Nationality

Indian citizen for IAS and IPS.

Age Limit

Generally:

• 21 to 32 years (General Category)

Age relaxation available for reserved categories.

Number of Attempts

General – 6

OBC – 9

SC/ST – Unlimited attempts up to age limit

(Subject to current UPSC rules.)
